A .500 (B/P EXPRESS) SINGLE-SHOT FALLING-BLOCK RIFLE, MODEL 'HENRY PATENT', serial no. 1758,
for between 1865-69, with round tapering 26 3/4in. barrel, the top near breech signed 'ALEX'R HENRY 12 SOUTH ST. ANDREW ST. EDINBURGH PATENT NO.'S 1106 & 91', block and beaded blade fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with three additional folding leaves, top of nocksform marked 'PATENT', border engraved slab-sided receiver, under-lever operated falling block, left hand back-action lock with exposed hammer and signed 'ALEX'R HENRY', chequered walnut pistol-grip butt-stock, the top of wrist and front of comb inlet with a period adjustable peep-sight, chequered iron heel-plate with central trapdoor, moulded horn grip-cap, smooth walnut fore-end amateurly engraved with kills of various species including 'Bear', 'Chamois', 'Stag' and 'Reindeer' and the owners name, moulded tip to fore-end, traces only of finish

Provenance: This rifle is recorded in the excellent 'Alexander Henry, Rifle Maker' by Donald Dallas as a 'military pattern breech loading rifle' and remarked as 'carbine left lock'.
